I don't normally write about private occasions, but if the Washington Post can . . . (to read their account, go online to the Post and search for "Mertz").
Barbara Mertz (aka Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels) turned 85 on September 29th and about a hundred of us gathered at her house to celebrate. As befits the author of so many books set in Egypt, there were pyramids, belly dancers, a camel and the camel driver's "slave girl" with her python. Many came in costume. Barbara Rosenblatt, who voices Barbara's books, led a cast of amateurs in a dramatized radio presentation of one of her stories.
Aaron Elkins made us promise to gather again in 10 years for her 95th.
